I happened to find a few strange babies in our basement, but when my grandfather told me what they were, I was speechless.

That night, my daughter Liana came home to find me sitting on the basement stairs with a blanket draped over my shoulders. I told her there was a surprise downstairs, but she had to be very quiet. When she saw the nest, she let out a gasp of surprise. “Mom,” she whispered, “they chose our house.” I didn’t know what to say, because it was exactly as it seemed. It wasn’t as if they had just appeared there by chance; rather, our quiet, cluttered basement had miraculously become a place where a little family found warmth, shelter, and a gentle respite from the

outside world.

The real surprise came the next morning. Grandpa remembered that our neighbor’s little white guinea pig had gone missing a week earlier, after she had accidentally left the garden gate open while cleaning. We called her immediately. When she arrived and saw the guinea pig, she covered her mouth with her hand and smiled with relief. Her name was Snowdrop. The neighbor had been searching discreetly, leaving food by the fences and asking neighborhood children if they had seen her. None of us had suspected that she had been right there at our feet the whole time.
