That afternoon, I went down to the basement simply to fetch my blue jar labels. The house was quiet, and the cool basement air carried the scent of old wood, cardboard, and dust. I almost turned back, but something urged me to keep going.
The basement looked neglected; jars, boxes, blankets, and old tools lay scattered everywhere. As I moved through the space with my phone’s flashlight, I heard a faint sound from behind the shelves. At first, I thought it was just the old house creaking, but then the sound repeated.
I aimed the light toward a far corner, near an old wooden chest. There, between the wall and some folded bags, I discovered a small nest made of dry grass and wood shavings. It looked too neat to be accidental, so I approached cautiously.
Then I saw them: several tiny, newborn creatures
snuggled close together in the center of the nest. Their eyes were closed, their bodies soft and pink, and they barely moved. I had no idea what they were, but I knew I had just discovered something hidden and unexpected right beneath my house.
