“Hello, girls.”
Chloe’s eyes immediately filled with tears.
“I know this is a terrible time.”
“I’m sorry,” I said quietly, gripping the edge of the door. “I’m just not ready for visitors. Julian just passed away.”
Chloe covered her mouth.
A sob escaped anyway.
Then she said something that made me stop.
“I know.”
She looked down at Nora.
Then back at me.
“And that’s why I came.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Chloe took a shaky breath.
“I never planned to tell you this.”
Something in her voice made my stomach tighten.
“But after what Julian did,” she continued, “I can’t let you keep believing something that isn’t true.”
My hand tightened around the doorframe.
“What are you talking about?”
She reached inside her coat.
Then she pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It looked old.
The edges were worn from being handled too many times.
Chloe stared at it for several seconds before lifting her eyes to mine.
“Your son never told you the real reason he donated his kidney to Nora, did he?”
For a moment, I couldn’t answer.
“What reason?”
The air on the porch suddenly felt thin.
I looked past Chloe into my hallway.
Julian’s jacket was still hanging there.
The same jacket he had worn the week before surgery.
