My in-laws br0ke my leg, and my husband said, “Let her learn to obey.” Three days later, they came to the hospital just to m0ck me, but I stayed silent, pulled out a recording, and called my lawyer… never imagining that the police were already searching the house.

His hair was perfectly styled.

He looked like a man arriving for a business lunch.

Gloria followed.

Walter came last.

He looked exhausted.

Nathan smiled.

“Rachel.”

I said nothing.

He glanced at Rebecca.

“Who is this?”

“My attorney.”

His smile disappeared.

Gloria scoffed.

“Attorney?”

“For what?”

I remained silent.

Nathan stepped closer.

“We came because this situation has gotten completely out of hand.”

Rebecca said:

“Stay where you are.”

Nathan stared at her.

“This is between my wife and me.”

“No.”

Rebecca replied.

“It isn’t.”

Gloria crossed her arms.

“She fell.”

I looked at her.

She stared back without blinking.

“Rachel knows she fell.”

Walter looked at the floor.

Nathan nodded.

“You were upset.”

“You slipped.”

“You hit the kitchen island.”

“You were in pain.”

“You probably don’t remember clearly.”

There it was.

The new story.

Exactly as predicted.

I reached toward the bedside drawer.

Nathan watched me.

I removed the recorder.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“What’s that?”

I pressed play.

Gloria’s voice filled the room.
