My husband returned from a three-day fishing trip with a wedding ring mark on his finger — he hasn’t worn a ring in 12 years. My husband had taken the same fishing trip with his friends every summer for years. Three days at a lake. Bad cell service. Cheap motel. Nothing unusual. But when Mark came home Sunday night, something felt different. He hugged me quickly, carried his bag upstairs, and barely talked through dinner. Then he reached for his glass. That’s when I saw it. A pale band around his left ring finger. A perfect wedding ring mark. Mark hadn’t worn his wedding ring in twelve years. After breaking that finger at work, the ring became uncomfortable, so he’d kept it in our bedroom drawer ever since. “What’s that?” He followed my eyes. For a second, he froze.

“Why?”

“He said seeing it reminded him of losing you.”

I closed my eyes.

“He told you that?”

“Yes.”

Then she added:

“He said he injured his finger around the same time.”

I remembered that day perfectly.

Mark coming home from work with his hand wrapped in a towel.

Me driving him to urgent care.

Helping him button shirts while his finger healed.

Later placing his wedding ring safely in the bedroom drawer because it hurt him to wear it.

He had taken a real memory from our marriage and rewritten it into a story about my death.

“I’m so sorry,” Claire said.

I believed her.

We agreed to meet the following afternoon.

Before we hung up, she asked:

“Did he ever tell you about me?”

“No.”

“He told me he was finally ready to start living again.”

I looked across the kitchen at our wedding photograph.

“He never stopped living.”
