My 8-year-old son started sleeping on the floor outside his grandma’s bedroom — and at 4 a.m., I heard him whisper, “I won’t let Uncle Craig do it to Grandma again.”

“I won’t let Uncle Craig do it to Grandma again.”

My bl*od went cold.

“Wyatt?”

He jumped and sat up.

I hurried over. “What won’t you let Uncle Craig do again?”

His eyes filled with tears.

He looked toward Grandma’s closed bedroom door before whispering:

“Mom, promise you won’t tell anyone.”

I could barely breathe.

“What did he do?”

Wyatt covered his face with both hands.

Then he leaned toward me and whispered one sentence into my ear.

By the time he finished, my hands were shaking so badly I had to grip the wall.

Chapter 2: One Sentence

“Uncle Craig holds his phone up to Grandma’s mouth when she’s sleepy,” Wyatt whispered.

His breath was warm and trembling against my ear.

“He makes her say words. He tells her what to say. He says, ‘Again, Mom. One more time.’”

I stopped breathing.
