MIL served the other DIL premium crab, but gave me an empty plate: ‘Our funds for you are exhausted.’ 2 days later she calls: ‘Pay mortgage, 90 days late!’ I laughed: ‘My funds for you are exhausted!’

I continued.

“Would you like me to list the rest? Vanessa’s veneers. Your cruise. Designer handbags. Restaurants. Or should I start with the $3,400 resort bill Mark helped you hide?”

“You went through our accounts?”

“I reviewed my own transfers and the records you gave me.”

The front door slammed behind me.

Mark stormed into my office.

“What the hell did you say to Mom?”

I put the phone on speaker.

“Perfect timing.”

Mark saw the blue folder.

His face drained.

I slid several screenshots across the desk.

She’ll still pay. She always does.

Keep her feeling guilty.

We don’t need to pretend to like her anymore.

Mark sank into the chair.

“Claire, listen—”

“I have been listening for six years.”

Diane shouted through the phone, “Mark, fix this!”

I laughed once.
