I Drove My Friend’s Mom Home… Then She Leaned In, “Take Me Somewhere Quiet.” I Never Regretted It

He almost smiled.

Then his expression changed.

“Dad’s marrying Natalie.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He told me yesterday.”

“That was fast.”

“The divorce isn’t even final for another two weeks.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“Mom congratulated him.”

“That sounds like Karen.”

“She even told me not to be angry.”

“That also sounds like Karen.”

He leaned back.

“You know her pretty well.”

I didn’t respond.

Daniel looked at me.

“Did you know she opened the bookstore?”

“Yes.”

“Have you been?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“You told me to stay away.”

He looked guilty.

“She asked about you on opening day.”

That hurt more than I wanted him to know.

“I almost called you.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I was still angry.”

Fair.

He stared at the floor for a long time.

Then said, “My therapist says I’m treating Mom like she belongs to me.”
