I said nothing.
That was enough.
“Oh my God.”
“Daniel.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Nothing happened while they were together.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“You picked her up that night.”
“Yes.”
“You took her somewhere for hours.”
“She asked me not to take her home.”
“And then what?”
“We talked.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“Bullshit.”
My anger rose.
“Watch yourself.”
“No, you watch yourself. That’s my mother.”
“I’m aware.”
“You were in my house every weekend.”
“I know.”
“She cooked for you.”
“I know.”
“You called her Mrs. Mercer.”
“When I was seventeen.”
He stared at me like I was a stranger.
“How long?”
I took a breath.
“We admitted there were feelings about four months after your parents separated.”
His jaw clenched.
“You admitted?”
“Yes.”
“So you love her?”
I should have lied.
I couldn’t.
