“The mortgage payment came from her?”
Teresa said nothing.
Sofia kept reading.
“$2,500 to repair Javier’s truck. $4,000 for an ‘investment’ his father made. $2,200 to clear Mariana’s credit-card debt.”
Javier began sweating.
“Sofia, please… married couples share expenses.”
“No. Those are debts you convinced me to pay for your family.”
Then she opened the final document.
It was a commercial loan application for **$140,000** in working capital for The Pines Manor.
Javier was listed as the primary applicant.
Sofia was listed as the primary co-signer and guarantor.
There was one problem.
Sofia had never seen the application.
And she had never signed it.
She looked at Javier.
“Care to explain this?”
He went rigid.
Teresa stepped backward.
“My corporate attorney reviewed this application this morning,” Sofia continued. “You used copies of my tax returns, my business credentials, and a forged signature.”
The general manager stared in disbelief.
“I never saw any loan application.”
“Because it was still in final underwriting,” Sofia replied.
Javier raised both hands.
“I can explain! The manor was drowning in debt. I knew that once the Altavista contract went through, we could pay it off before you even noticed!”
“My signature, Javier?”
Silence.
“I asked you about my forged signature.”
Teresa jumped in.
“Javier is your husband! Spouses shouldn’t be so selfish with each other!”
Sofia slowly turned toward her.
“So you knew too.”
Teresa realized too late what she had revealed.
“I—I only knew he was looking for financing!”
“The signature was forged,” Sofia repeated.
The room went cold.
Mariana stared at Javier.
“You forged her name?”
“It was just to speed up the paperwork!” he shouted. “I was going to tell her before the funds were disbursed!”
“It was already in final approval.”
“But the money hadn’t reached the account!”
“And that makes it acceptable?”
The word **fraud** hung in the room.
Until then, the relatives had tried to treat everything as a family argument between an entitled bride and an overbearing mother-in-law.
Now there were documents.
Money trails.
A signature Sofia said she had never authorized.
The general manager immediately stepped away from Teresa.
