At 4:15, I checked our joint bank account.
And by 5:00, I finally understood something I should have understood years earlier.
Almost everything we called “ours” existed legally because of me.
The mortgage was in my name.
Most of the down payment had come from my savings.
The utility accounts were under my name.
Our emergency fund had been built mostly from automatic transfers from my salary.
Yet for years, I had treated all of it as equally his because I believed we were building toward the same future.
David had just told me we weren’t.
So at 6:15 the next morning, I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.
My laptop was open.
Several documents were spread out in front of me.
I had printed copies of the mortgage.
Bank statements.
Household expenses.
Insurance policies.
And one sheet of paper with a list of every financial account we shared.
When David walked into the kitchen, barefoot and half asleep, he stopped immediately.
