“You don’t need an exception because the requirement itself has no authority.”
Her jaw tightened.
“Did you consult an attorney?”
“I read what I signed.”
“You are not a lawyer.”
“Neither are you.”
That ended the friendly portion of the conversation.
Brenda leaned closer.
“You should think very carefully before becoming the only homeowner refusing a community safety measure.”
That sentence bothered me.
“Is that a threat?”
“Of course not.”
“Then why does it sound like one?”
“I’m telling you there may be enforcement consequences.”
“For refusing to give you my key?”
“For noncompliance.”
“Same sentence with a nicer word.”
She closed the folder.
“You’ll receive formal instructions.”
“I look forward to reading them.”
Brenda walked away.
I closed the door.
Ten minutes later, I ordered a new doorbell camera.
Not because I was afraid.
Because documentation had become necessary.
The first formal notice arrived three days later.
